As an educator, one of the most important components is building relationships with scholars. I think it is also important to remember all relationships are different. I realized the importance of building relationships very early on in my teaching career. I started with a very authoritative approach and I soon realize how exhausting that approach was and how significant number of students failed to respond to that approach. I learned it was vitally important to meet the scholars where they were and build from that perspective. I am certainly not a relationship guru with students but, I will say its important to get to “know” your students.
Building relationships will not happen quickly or in the manner you might think it will proceed, but it is achievable. When I say all relationships are different, I speak of equity. I think it’s paramount to give students what they need in relationship building. There will be some students that need different things in relationship building such as: attention, patience, compassion empathy and many times just someone to listen. In building relationship share things about you and your family and make it relatable because students are immensely looking for a way to relate to their teacher. Remember we must “REACH them BEFORE we can TEACH THEM”
